Introduction
Do you criticise yourself and feel demotivated to prioritise your health? If so, I want to invite you to shift your mindset and embrace a positive approach to your physical, emotional and cognitive health.
In my last newsletter, I talked about the importance of a positive approach to building healthy habits. This is so important I continue to explore how to effectively boost motivation in this blog article. In particular, exploring self-criticism in more detail. How it can hinder motivation and why adopting a positive self-compassionate mindset is crucial for boosting and maintaining motivation.
Self-criticism has its roots in negative self-talk, which can have detrimental effects on our mental, emotional and physical well-being. By constantly berating ourselves for not prioritising our health, we limit our potential for growth and improvement. And find ourselves repeating the same old patterns of unhealthy habits over and over again.
Instead, let’s focus on self-compassion, self-care/ self-kindness. Embracing a positive approach to our health means nurturing and nourishing ourselves rather than using self-criticism to try to do what we feel we should do.
It’s about finding joy in movement, nourishing our bodies with nutritious foods, and embracing other healthy habits. Not only will this improve our motivation, but it will also enhance our overall well-being because your health and happiness deserve it.
Understanding self-criticism: The negative impact on motivation
Self-criticism can be a vicious cycle that keeps us trapped in a state of demotivation. When we constantly focus on our flaws and shortcomings, it becomes difficult to find the motivation to prioritize our physical health. Negative self-talk can make us believe that we are unworthy or incapable of making positive changes.
This self-critical mindset not only affects our motivation but also takes a toll on our mental well-being. It leads to feelings of low self-esteem, anxiety, and depression. It becomes a barrier to embracing a positive approach to physical health and ultimately hinders our overall well-being.
It deflates us and takes the wind out of our sails.
In summary, it just doesn’t cut it as an effective way of motivating ourselves to adopt healthy habits. When we are self-critical we are treating ourselves like an annoying, unfriendly, and judgmental friend. Someone we don’t want to hang out with. Someone we don’t want to do nice things with.
To break free from this cycle, it’s essential to recognize and challenge our self-critical thoughts. We need to question the validity of our negative beliefs and replace them with positive reflections and intentions. By reframing our mindset and focusing on self-care, we can begin to cultivate a healthier relationship with our bodies and boost our motivation.
The power of self-compassion: Boosting motivation through positivity
Self-compassion is not just about bubble baths and face masks; it’s about taking intentional actions to prioritise our physical, cognitive, and emotional well-being. By embracing self-compassion, we empower ourselves to make positive choices that nurture our bodies and boost our motivation.
When we approach physical health from a place of self-care, we shift our focus from criticism to compassion. We begin to appreciate our bodies for all they can do and celebrate the progress we make rather than fixating on perfection. This positive mindset not only improves our motivation but also creates a foundation for sustainable and long-term changes.
Embracing self-care also means finding joy in movement. Instead of seeing exercise as a chore, we can explore activities that bring us happiness and fulfillment. Whether it’s dancing, swimming, or practising yoga, finding an exercise routine that we enjoy helps us stay motivated and committed to our physical health goals.
Identifying and challenging self-critical thoughts.
To break free from self-criticism, we must first become aware of our negative self-talk patterns. Pay attention to the thoughts that arise when you look in the mirror or engage in physical activity. Are they uplifting and encouraging, or are they filled with self-doubt and criticism?
Once you’ve identified these self-critical thoughts, it’s time to challenge them. What you’re doing when you challenge negative thoughts is to see if they are actually true. Or whether they just come from some notion of perfection that is unrealistic.
This process of challenging your negative thoughts will be the topic of a future post. So, for now, I’d like to direct you to the work of Byron Katie. I feel her approach is the the best one to recognise critical thinking, question its truth, and then look at the situation in a kinder more constructive way. One that promotes good health for body, mind and soul.

It can also be helpful to seek support from loved ones or professionals who can provide a fresh perspective and help you challenge your self-critical thoughts. Surrounding yourself with positive influences and practising self-compassion are essential steps in embracing a self-care mindset and boosting your motivation.
Embracing self-compassion: The role of self-care in physical health
Self-compassion is a fundamental component of self-care and plays a crucial role in our physical health. It involves treating ourselves with kindness, understanding, and acceptance, especially when facing setbacks or challenges.
When we approach our physical health with self-compassion, we acknowledge that change takes time and effort. We recognize that we are human and bound to make mistakes along the way. Instead of beating ourselves up for not reaching our goals, we offer ourselves grace and compassion.
Self-compassion also allows us to listen to our bodies and honour their needs. It encourages us to rest when we are tired, nourish ourselves with nutritious foods, and engage in activities that bring us joy. By prioritizing self-care and self-compassion, we create a foundation for sustainable and long-lasting physical health.
The benefits of a positive mindset on physical health

Creating a personalised self-care plan: Setting realistic goals and expectations
Creating a personalized self-care plan is essential for women over 55 who want to boost motivation and embrace a positive approach to physical health. Start by setting realistic goals and expectations that align with your lifestyle, abilities, and preferences.
Consider what activities bring you joy and how you can incorporate them into your routine. Set a schedule that allows for regular exercise, meal planning, and self-care practices.
Remember to be flexible and adaptable, as life can often throw unexpected curveballs.
Break down your goals into smaller, achievable steps. Celebrate each milestone along the way, no matter how small, and give yourself credit for the progress you make. By setting realistic goals and expectations, you set yourself up for success and foster a positive mindset.
Finding support and accountability: Building a network of like-minded individuals
Building a network of like-minded individuals can provide invaluable support and accountability on your journey towards embracing self-care and boosting motivation. Seek out communities, whether online or in-person, that share your goals and values.
Join exercise classes or groups tailored for women over 55, where you can connect with others who are on a similar path. Engage in online forums or social media groups where you can share your experiences, ask questions, and receive support and encouragement from others.
Having a support system not only provides motivation but also helps you stay accountable. Share your goals and progress with your network, and allow them to cheer you on and hold you responsible for your actions. Together, you can navigate the challenges and celebrate the successes of your self-care journey.
