Do you exercise on your own, with someone else, or in a group?
A few of my members have shared that while they enjoy walking on their own or with a partner, they are more motivated when they’ve scheduled a group fitness class.
And it’s often more satisfying and enjoyable.
Of course, as a group fitness business owner and instructor, that’s music to my ears.
But why does motivation get a boost when thinking about working out in a group setting?
There are several reasons:
1. Groups offer structure: Group fitness classes offer a set schedule and specific exercises. This structure makes it easier to stay focused and committed.
2. Accountability: When you’re part of a group, you are more likely to feel motivated to attend regularly to avoid letting others down or being noticed for your absence.
3. Social Interaction: We’re social beings and group fitness classes provide an opportunity to interact with other like-minded people. There’s a sense of camaraderie and belonging that comes with being part of a group.
This can make it more enjoyable and satisfying further enhancing your motivation to attend.
4. Support & Healthy Competition: Groups offer invaluable support and encouragement and this can be uplifting and motivating. It inspires you to keep going. Group classes often create a friendly competitive atmosphere, and this helps us challenge ourselves to get the results we’re after.
5. Variety: These classes offer a variety of exercises that keep things interesting, so less boredom.
6. Expert Guidance: Having a knowledgeable instructor guiding you through the exercises can also provide valuable feedback and help you improve your techniques and so your results.
7. Time Commitment: Scheduling a specific time to exercise, as you do with a group fitness class, can help you prioritize your fitness routine and make it a regular part of your schedule.
It’s important to say that exercise on your own has many advantages too. Like peace and flexibility.
So the essence of a successful exercise routine lies in a balance between the two- solo (or with another person) and group.
I know the members of my group fitness business, Prime Active have struck this healthy balance for themselves. They’ve developed an approach to their exercise routine that best suits their lifestyle, preferences, and fitness goals.
Remember, consistency (showing up and just doing it) is vital in maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle, regardless of the exercise format you choose.
In essence, the group exercise setting provides a safe space where you can challenge yourself out of your comfort zone. It also helps you share your wins with others who understand and empathize.
It encourages an environment where you can be safely vulnerable, get the right advice, and find motivation from others who have faced similar obstacles. The connections you develop in the group exercise setting become an emotional and social support system that makes the fitness journey more enjoyable, meaningful, effective, and sustainable.
